Portrait by Sarah Huny Young

Sidney Mullis is a sculptor who is building an invented landscape to see where childhood selves go in adulthood and if it is possible to bring them back. Previously, she has made work about the intimacy of forgetting, puberty, and the performance of gender.

From her training as a dancer, she is sensitive to how bodies move through space, and the narrow bandwidth in which they can do so safely and without scrutiny. Now, her dance partners are her materials and they share who leads.

Her work has been exhibited in a number of locations including Berlin, Tokyo, England, and Croatia. Solo shows include the Leslie Lohman Museum (NYC), Wick Gallery (NYC), Bunker Projects (Pittsburgh, PA), Neon Heater Gallery (OH), Bucknell University (PA), Rowan University (NJ), University of Mary Washington (VA), and more. She has been an artist-in-residence at The Wassaic Project, Women’s Studio Workshop, MASS MoCA, Ox-Bow, Bunker Projects, among others. Her work has been featured in publications such as Hyperallergic, Young Space, Maake Magazine, De:Formal, and Sculpture Magazine.

Mullis teaches sculpture, art writing intensives and advanced art seminars at Penn State University. Since 2016, she has been the program coordinator of Penn State's John M. Anderson Endowed Lecture Series hosting 8-10 visiting artists, curators, art educators, and critics per academic year.

Mullis lives and works with her materials in Pittsburgh, PA. She is new to the area and would like to make friends virtually, until the pandemic ends.
